“O vile Kƒatriya! inviting the BrŒhma˜as you were out to ruin them with their families. But God has preserved our sanctity; it is you and your race that are undone. In the course of a year you shall perish; and not a soul shall be left in your family to offer water to gratify your spirit.” Hearing the curse the king was sore stricken with fear. Again, a voice was heard from heaven, “O holy BrŒhma˜as you have uttered this curse without careful thought; the king has committed no crime.” The BrŒhma˜as were astounded when they heard the ethereal voice. The king hastened to the kitchen. There was neither any food there nor the BrŒhma˜a cook. The king returned in deep thought. He related the whole story to the BrŒhma˜as and threw himself on the ground frantic with fear. (1—4)
