taba nŒrada sabahī samujhŒvŒ, pµuruba kathŒprasaṅgu sunŒvŒ. mayanŒ satya sunahu mama bŒnī, jagadambŒ tava sutŒ bhavŒnī.1. ajŒ anŒdi sakti abinŒsini, sadŒ sambhu aradhaṅga nivŒsini. jaga sambhava pŒlana laya kŒrini, nija icchŒ līlŒ bapu dhŒrini.2. janamī¡ prathama daccha gṛha jŒī, nŒmu sati sundara tanu pŒī. taha¡hu¡ sati saṅkarahi bibŒhī ¡, kathŒ prasiddha sakala jaga mŒhī ¡.3. eka bŒra Œvata siva saṅgŒ, dekheu raghukula kamala pataṅgŒ. bhayau mohu siva kahŒ na kīnhŒ, bhrama basa beṣu sīya kara līnhŒ.4.

Then NŒrada reassured them all, narrating to them the past history of UmŒ. He said, “MenŒ, hear my true words: your daughter is none else than BhavŒn¶ (the eternal Consort of Ýiva), Mother of the universe. She is the unborn and imperishable divine 106 * ÝR” RMACARITAMNASA* energy, which has no beginning; She is Ýambhu’s inseparable half. She creates, maintains and then dissolves the universe and assumes the semblance of a material form of Her own will. First she was born in the house of Dakƒa. Sat¶ was Her name and charming was Her form. Even in that incarnation Sat¶ was married with Ýa˘kara. The story is well-known throughout the world. One day, while She was returning home with Ýiva, She beheld Ýr¶ RŒma, who is a sun as it were to the lotus-like race of Raghu. Bewildered by His sight, She did not listen to Ýiva’s advice and was beguiled into assuming the disguise of S¶tŒ. (1—4)
